Running a building company means I’m used to working with bricks, mortar, and timber — not HTML, CSS, and plugins. But when it came to updating High Spec Building’s website, I decided to swap my hard hat for a designer’s hat and take on the challenge myself.
Why? Because just like a building project, I wanted every detail to reflect exactly who we are, what we do, and how we do it. I didn’t just want another “template” site that could belong to any builder. I wanted it to feel like us — personal, practical, and built to last.
Planning First
Every good build starts with a plan. I sketched out what I wanted visitors to see — the journey from landing on our homepage to finding the right service and getting in touch. This meant thinking about what information was most important and how to guide people naturally through it.
Solid Foundations
Just like a good base for a build, the structure of the site had to be strong. I focused on clear navigation, mobile-friendly design, and a layout that made sense. Using resources like WordPress and quality plugins helped me create a framework that was easy to update and maintain.
Finishing Touches
This is where the character comes in — real project photos, genuine customer reviews, and a tone of voice that sounds like how we speak in real life. I wanted it to feel authentic, just like walking onto one of our job sites.
Lessons Learned Along the Way
Was it easy? Not really. There were moments I wanted to throw the laptop out of the window. But, just like a tricky build, once you push through the challenges, the satisfaction is worth it.
Now, our website isn’t just a place to showcase our work — it’s another project I can proudly say I built with my own hands. And this time, no dust or sore back included.
